The dialogue
- Good evening, Helen.
- Good evening, love.
- Two pounds (pound - фунт) of bananas, please.
- Sorry, dear. But, there aren’t any bananas today.
- Well, a pound of pears (pear - груша) then.
- There are no pears either.
- Are there any oranges?
- No, there aren’t any. Sorry, love. There are no mandarins either.
- Ok, then what do you have?
- There are some apples. Apples are good for you. An apple a day (a day- в день) keeps the doctor away (keep away- удерживать, предохранять от).
- Oh, thanks for the advice (advice - совет). But to have apple all the time is boring (boring - скучный). Variety (variety - разнообразие) is the spice (spice- приправа, зд. соль) of life.
- Well, you can eat them fresh (fresh- свежий) or baked (baked- запеченный, приготовленный, прошедший термическую обработку), and you can also make apple pie, apple strudel, apple …
- Are apples so important?
- Oh, yes. The whole problem between Adam and Eve was an apple.
- What silly (silly- глупый) problems they had then.
- Oh, well. I suppose (suppose- предполагать) we are here because of an apple.
- Give me two pounds then, please.
- Here you are, two pounds of apples.
- Thank you, Helen, for the apples and for your wonderful (wonderful- чудесный) words of wisdom (wisdom- мудрость). You’re still a great saleswoman (saleswoman - продавщица).
- No, I’m not a saleswoman. I’m your friend! Look after (look after – присматривать, зд. беречь) yourself!
